Optometry And Vision Science, Unilorin

The University of Ilorin provides the only Optometry and Vision Science programme in South-Western and North-Central Nigeria. The Programme was established in 2013 and was approved by the University of Ilorin Senate in 2014.  In line with NUC and ODORBN guidelines, the Programme offers a six year degree program leading to a professional Doctor of Optometry (OD). The curriculum of the Optometry & Vision Science programme is based on the philosophy that the programme shall in cooperation with other Departments in related Faculties, produce competent, skilled and versatile Optometrists / Vision scientists capable of facing the task of delivering appropriate professional eye-care services, manpower, machinery and other aspects of vision care industry needed in solving ocular and associated environmental problems.
The Optometry & Vision Science programme will follow the University of Ilorin Community Based Experience and Service (COBES) / national Students Industrial Works Experience Scheme (SIWES) approaches which are student-centered, society oriented, and problem solving. The programme aims at harnessing the huge human and natural resources in the country, especially within and outside the country, at the same time exposing the students to the most modern technology, techniques and tools of eye-care for meeting the needs of the society. The programme shall train graduates with sound scientific and professional knowledge and skills to work within and outside Nigeria for the benefit of all, particularly in preventing blindness.
